12 Step Groups at Novak’s House

Many people in addiction recovery choose to move into sober living homes after completing addiction treatment so they can transition to a sober lifestyle. Sober living facilities often utilize the 12 Step program philosophy by mandating weekly meetings among residents in a group setting to help each person stay on track with their recovery. Novak’s House is a sober living facility in Wilmington, Delaware, created by Brandon Novak, a recovery advocate and certified intervention specialist who’s been over 6 years sober from heroin addiction.

At Novak’s House, we also implement a 12 Step Program to help our residents remain active in their recovery, plus to help them develop self-confidence, teach lapse prevention skills, and more. Keep reading to learn more about recovery homes and the purpose of implementing the 12 Step philosophy in recovery.

Breaking Down the 12 Steps of AA

If you’ve never heard of the 12 Step model for substance abuse treatment, then you may be wondering what each of the 12 steps is. So you can better understand the benefits of this philosophy in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, here are the 12 steps of AA simplified:

  1. Admit that you’re powerless against your addiction
  2. Come to believe in a greater power that can restore your sanity
  3. Decide to turn your will and your life over to the care of God or any other higher power
  4. Perform a moral inventory of yourself
  5. Admit to God, to yourself, and another person the exact nature of your wrongdoings
  6. Be ready to have God or another higher power remove all these defects of character
  7. Humbly ask God to remove your shortcomings
  8. Make a list of all the people that have been harmed by your addiction
  9. Made direct amends to these people wherever possible, except when doing so would injure them or cause them distress
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and be quick to admit when you’re wrong
  11. Pray and meditate to improve your conscious contact with God, as you understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for you and the power to carry out that will
  12. After you’ve had a spiritual awakening after following these steps, try to carry this message to others with addictions and practice these steps in your life daily

The 12 Steps method was created by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Although the steps were originally utilized in treating alcoholism, they've been expanded to help individuals recovering from other kinds of substance use disorders. The 12 Step groups at Novak’s House are no different. Upon admission, each resident is made aware of our intentions to utilize these steps to create a plan for step by step recovery.

12 Step Groups for Addiction Recovery

Fortunately, recovery homes for addiction, like Novak’s House, utilize the 12 Step philosophy to help people in their transition from addiction to rehab to a sober lifestyle. No matter how much treatment you’ve received for your substance use disorder, it’s normal to feel nervous about leaving rehab. It can feel like you’re starting a whole new life, and you are! This transition doesn’t have to be scary.

As someone who’s battled drug addiction himself, Brandon Novak understands his residents’ concerns with leaving rehab. It’s normal to ask yourself, “Will I make it?” “Can I keep this up?” “What happens if I relapse?” Recovering addicts who have recently completed their rehab programs may also struggle to readjust to a sober lifestyle. They may feel uncomfortable asking others for help or don’t want to feel like a burden to their loved ones.

Because the uncertainty of life after rehab can be intimidating, Novak’s House not only offers housing to those who want to take an additional step between rehab and going back home, but he also incorporates 12 step groups to support residents every step of the way. Our 12 Step meetings at Novak’s House are held five times a week, during which residents will have the opportunity to speak to their sponsors, leaders, and other members of the recovery community.

In addition to developing self-confidence and awareness in recovery, the purpose of the 12 Step Program at Novak’s House is to offer residents a safe space where they can ask difficult questions, talk about their struggles, and connect with others who are going through the same things. Participation not only contributes to increased accountability and self-awareness but also allows residents to benefit from peer support.

If you’ve completed addiction treatment but need the extra support in adjusting to a sober lifestyle, Brandon can help. Whether it’s sober living or setting up a drug or alcohol intervention for a loved one, he’s open to helping all who are seeking recovery from addiction.
