The year 2020 is here and job hunters are getting a head start on their New Year’s resolutions. Looking for a job also means more interviews to attend; it’s important to dress for the occasion and to feel “Sharp”.
Formally of the prank TV show “Jackass,” Brandon Novak teamed up with Sharp Dress Man, a Baltimore-based organization that fits men for suits on a referral basis by reputable organizations. This organization is giving a second chance to the newly sober and empowering local men to go after jobs with a fresh and sharp look, dressing 1700 men in 2018. Having had so many donations this past year, they decided to host their first giveaway in Philadelphia.
Novak was a recipient of the group’s generosity after having recovered from more than 20 years of drug and alcohol addiction. Brandon believes that the opposite of addiction is connection and he reminds people that help is available. There are people out there who care, and that people are more than just a name or a number. “Let me ask you how you’re doing and more importantly, wait to hear the answer,” Novak said.
Sharp Dress Man founder Christopher Schafer shared that a lot of the guys that come in their shop don’t understand the work they’re doing until they see themselves in the mirror with a suit on. “I feel like money. I feel like the man of the world or the man of all people,” North Philadelphian Justin Best said.
“You help all these guys and hear stories of people who are just — they’re just trying,” Novak said. Some may think a suit is just a suit, but to some, it’s a first step in the right direction or even a second chance at life. Having a suit on not only makes people look “sharp” for interviews, but Philadelphia resident Ramon Miller mentioned that it helped uplift his spirits, making him feel more important and like you can accomplish something.
